Top Rope Abseiling Instructor Assessment

This is a one and a half day assessment. The venue for assessment is Lassies Wall at Freycinet. Candidates are required to run 1 half day abseiling session, 1 half day top roping session and lead climb 1 single pitch climb using artificial gear (nuts, cams etc). Abseiling and top rope climbing sessions will involve candidates setting up a minimum of 2 abseils/top ropes and running sessions with 3 - 5 clients. Basic rescues will be assessed (such as responding to a top rope climber who has their knee stuck mid cliff.

Candidates are expected to:

• Keep themselves and their clients safe at all times
• Demonstrate a well engrained safety check and briefing procedures
• Offer a quality experience to their clients
• Be proficient at responding to any emergency situation that may arise
• Be competent at leading and protecting a 'trad' climb with artificial protection (nuts, cams etc). This climb has no minimum grade specified. 

Assessment cost is $376 for one and a half days assessment.

To apply for assessment:

1. Enrol through Drysdale Institute, Tasmanian Polytechnic (TP) with whom the TCIA has a partnership. TP provides insurance and issues statements of attainment aligned with the National Training Package upon successful completion of the assessment.  To enrol through TP contact Jeanette Cross during business hours on 03 62338720. jeanette.cross@polytechnic.tas.edu.au She will then post an information package.

2. Candidates are also required to formerly apply to the TCIA in order to prove their suitability for assessment. Please complete the application form and post it along with a copy of your log and $65 TCIA membership to the TCIA secretary at least 1 month prior to assessment.

Remember to include:

• Complete the TCIA application form (download form here).
• Contact details of 2 referees who are happy to comment on your suitability for assessment
• A log book demonstrating you have assisted instructing abseiling/top roping on at least 4 different occasions and that you have climbed > 8 traditional climbs
• $65 membership to the TCIA (2 years)

3. Candidates are required to organise  3 - 5 'clients' who will be used for assessment. These clients are required to pay $16.60 (conc. $5.55) each which covers their insurance for the weekend. Clients can enrol through TP during business hours on 03 62338720. Jeanette will then post an information package.
